Linda Leonard takes over at Postie

Three months after celebrating 110 years in business, value apparel retailer Postie has appointed a new chief executive.

Linda Leonard stepped into the chief executive role at Postie this month. With more than 30 years of apparel experience, she has acted as merchandise director with Postie since 2015, and previously held senior roles in New Zealand at Number One Shoes, The Warehouse Group and Farmers.

Originally from the UK, Leonard has had a successful merchandising career at Arcadia Group, owner of Topshop and Dorothy Perkins, before eight years with Debenhams. 

Leonard replaces Rod Orrock, who has served as chief executive across Postie since September 2017. The Sydney-based executive is also the chief executive of Australian retailer Best & Less, which shares Postie’s corporate parent company Greenlit Brands, where Orrock will continue to oversee the company’s Australasian value brands. Greenlit Brands is a division of South African retail holding company Steinhoff International.

“Linda has been an integral part of the senior management team since she joined Postie in 2015,” says Orrock. “Her contribution helped the company to turn a profit last year and she has supported strong foundations for sustainable growth.” 

Orrock says Leonard’s strategic planning and business skills will help lead Postie into further growth. He believes customers are now looking for offshore trends in affordable fashion, meaning Leonard’s local and international fashion experience is a valuable asset.

“There’s been a significant change in the type of product that is now selling in our stores from when we first opened shop 110 years ago.

“We’ve kept our eye firmly on value and quality, invested heavily in our online offering, and Linda’s strong understanding of our customer will ensure we continue to cater to the Kiwi mum and her family.” 

Leonard is excited about what lies ahead in her new role. 

“As new entrants hit the New Zealand market, it’s important that we continue to really listen to our customers and meet their needs better than our global competitors. 

“I’m very lucky to work with a world-class team of people with a genuine collaborative culture, and I look forward to the next chapter in Postie’s journey.”

How do Kiwis do their Christmas shopping at Mighty Ape?

New Zealand e-tailer Mighty Ape surveyed 2,962 Kiwi shoppers post-Christmas last year. Among its findings are that Black Friday is officially bigger than Boxing Day among its audience, with almost four times as many products were sold on Black Friday compared to Boxing Day 2018. Cyber Monday, the online-only sale that falls on the Monday following Black Friday, has also proven to be popular with Kiwis. It now also outsells Boxing Day at Mighty Ape.​ ​It's presented further findings in a clever infographic.
