Foodstuffs North Island new CEO named as Chris Quin

Food Stuffs North Island (FSNI) chairman Peter Anderson says Quin has the leadership skills to meet the needs of Kiwi shoppers.

He says Quin’s experience in the IT and communications sector also gives him an edge in understanding how technology will shape the future of supermarkets.

“Chris understands the Kiwi consumer and the role of technology in serving them – these are essential ingredients in the changing landscape of grocery,” Anderson says.

Quin previously started out in sales roles at Telecom (now Spark NZ) in 1991 before moving to general manager of its advanced solutions in 2000.

He became the chief executive of the home, business and mobile division of Telecom in 2012.

In the same year he also became the CEO of Telecom’s retail sector, which accounts for Telecom’s performance in the consumer and SME market.

 Anderson says FSNI undertook a global search for a new CEO, with candidates from the UK, Europe and the US considered.

“ After that rigorous process, the fact that the best person for the job is a Kiwi is a bonus and a credit to New Zealand business leaders,” Anderson says.

Quin says he’s delighted to join a company that has served Kiwis for over 90 years.

“I’m looking forward to rolling up my sleeves to learn a lot more about the unique world of grocery and working with the team and almost 350 store owners to create a fantastic experience for Kiwi shoppers,” he says.

Quin’s other accolades include a Sir Peter Blake Leadership Award in 2010 for his leadership achievements and community contributions.

He also is chair of Auckland-based business growth hub, The Icehouse.

FSNI managing director Murray Jordan will remain at the helm of the company until Quin begins in September.

Anderson says Jordan has made a big contribution to Foodstuffs over 11 years.

“It is a tribute to his leadership that we are now ready for new developments to benefit our customers, suppliers, staff and owner-operators.”

FSNI was created in 2013, merging two former North Island Foodstuffs co-operatives. Anderson says the merger is almost complete.

It has 19,000 employees across two support centres and eight distribution centres that take care of 98 New Worlds, 203 Four Squares and 41 Pak’nSaves.

Over all it employs more than 22,000 people.

FSNI is separately owned by its retail members and operates independently with its own board and management to Foodstuffs South Island.

The two entities make up Foodstuffs Limited, a Kiwi owned and operated company which employs over 30,000 people nationwide.
