Retail reinvention: Eastgate mall becomes town centre post-earthquake

Eastgate mall was one of the hardest-hit shopping centres in the 2011 Christchurch earthquake, but in the face of adversity, it’s only gotten stronger. The mall has been reinvented as more than just a shopping centre – it’s now home to the town library, a medical centre, NGOs, a gym, and is in the process of getting restaurants and a line up of stores for men put in. The gamble has paid off, as the mall’s overall foot traffic is up 30 percent.
