Pop-up firework stores have managed to keep New Zealand blasting over this year’s Guy Fawkes. New Zealand reached a record high in firework importation during the third quarter of 2015, taking the total number of fireworks imported up to $3.6 million – an increase of 44 percent year on year.
In my family, Guy Fawkes competes with Christmas as the biggest retail event of the year. My younger brother saves up hundreds of dollars during the preceding months so that he can defensively stock up on sparklers, fountains, spinning wheels, roman candles and various other colourful explosives – the idea being that if the Government finally cracks down on fireworks sales, the show can go on. He’s the Guy Fawkes equivalent of a doomsday prepper.
