We spoke with Curt Munk, head of strategy at FCB Red, the retail strategy division of the global marketing agency, about the future of shopper marketing. Munk has worked on marketing, store design and advertising for global giants such as Coca Cola, Sony, Nestle and Walmart.

Paper Plus helps teenage boys say 'I love you' on Mother's Day

Teenage boys aren't known for showing affection toward their mothers, but Paper Plus has worked out a way to get more than just a grunt out of them. To celebrate Mother's Day it teamed up with advertising agency FCB to encourage Kiwi kids to say it with a book, and tell their mums how much they love them.

It’s a crowded market within the books and stationery retail industry, so as one of the smaller players, you’ve got to stand out, Paper Plus' CEO Sam Shosanya says. At Retail NZ’s shop.kiwi event, he explained why the company decided to embark on a rebranding journey through a character he fondly referred to as a “green, blobby thing”.
