A strong earthquake was widely felt as far north as Auckland after it hit North Canterbury just after midnight on Monday morning. It caused two deaths, knocked out power in Blenheim, parts of Nelson and Lower Hutt, extensively damaged roading in the South Island and wreaked havoc throughout shops in the South Island and lower North Island.
