Botany Town Centre gets a $78 million facelift

Botany Town Centre has been operating in the Auckland suburb of East Tamaki since 2001, but it’s now beginning a $78 million redevelopment and extension project.

The development begins now and is intended to be complete by May next year. It will bring the centre’s gross lettable area from around 58,000 square metres to more than 62,700. After the completion, it will offer around 200 retailers, with some new international and national names in the mix.

Foodwise, the fresh food precinct next to New World will get a refresh, as will the outdoor area. The Hoyts cinema complex will receive a major refurbishment, with more than 1000 recliner seats upgrading to powered recliners, and the Hoyts Lux premium offering updated.

AMP Capital manages Botany Town Centre. The centre is owned by two Canadian investment companies known as PSPIB/CPPIB Waiheke Inc as part of a $1.2 billion New Zealand property portfolio. CPPIB came on board after receiving Overseas Investment Office approval in December 2017.

“After considered preparation and planning, we are thrilled to announce a significant retail, leisure and entertainment expansion in one of Auckland’s fastest-growing and most populous areas,” says AMP Capital portfolio manager Nick Cobham. “Botany Town Centre has always been the hub of the Botany community and will remain close to its roots in both design and spirit – just in a bigger, better and even more inviting format”.

Naylor Love is the main contractor for the project.

Cobham says Botany Town Centre is currently Auckland’s second-largest shopping centre by lettable area, behind Sylvia Park. Auckland City Council designated it as a metropolitan-zoned hub in its Unitary Plan in 2016.
