Cooper and Company development manager Campbell Williamson says New Zealand’s first standalone retail store from Tiffany & Co will take all of the ground floor of Australis, and Chanel will have a boutique shop in front of the Nathan building. Tiffany & Co announced its move into the building last year.
The planned store’s interior will feature the trademarked colour ‘Tiffany Blue’; polished stainless steel details with the same wheat leaf pattern that frames the entrance of the jeweller’s Fifth Avenue flagship store; marble and amazonite floors; and custom furnishings inspired by the stained glass works of Art Nouveau designer Louis Comfort Tiffany, son of the company’s founder, Charles Lewis Tiffany.
It indicated in August last year it would open in 2016.
Back to the Australis Nathan building, the office entrance lobby will be occupied by a new venture from Sweet Cuisine, headed by patissier Brian Campbell and his partner Rosie Campbell.
Nick McCaw of Mouthful Restaurant Group will open a new bar and cocktail lounge to compliment its existing Roukai lane operations.
Built in 1903 and 1904, the buildings originally served as warehouses and storefronts for influential importers and merchants, Andrew Entrican and Arthur Nathan.
Since then, each has undergone several changes of ownership, but both have remained largely untouched since the 1970s.
In May 2015 Cooper and Company and architects Peddle Thorp, under the guidance of Heritage New Zealand, began the painstaking process of restoration and refurbishment to create an impressive new mixed-use development at the edge of Britomart’s Takutai Square.
The upper floors will serve as offices for several premium commercial tenants, who will enjoy expertly restored interiors, beautiful modern facilities and sweeping views of the city and harbour.
As a representation of some of the last remaining Edwardian warehouses that once characterised Auckland’s bustling waterfront, Australis Nathan is of considerable historical significance to the city and is subject to stringent protections.
Kaumatua from Ngati Whatua will bless the Australis Nathan building on Thursday 28 July at 7.00am
