Read it again: The Register signs off for the summer

It’s been another big year in retail. But then again, when has it not? NZ Retail and The Register editor and associate publisher Sarah Dunn considers the big events of 2019 before she heads to the beach for a break.

The macro stories for New Zealand retailers this year were a continuation of ongoing themes every retailer worldwide is grappling with on some level:

  1. Digital evolution
  2. Globalisation
  3. Political change

These themes are expressed in every story we cover – for example, the rise of online pureplays like Amazon is a combination of all of them – and they are repeated again and again.

That said, less sweeping trends also emerged.

The Register’s top-read story for 2019 was our list of finalists for the Gem Retail Hotlist. More than 4,000 readers viewed this story, spending more than two minutes pondering which deserving retailer should win. We collected all the Hotlist stories here if you’d like to reflect back on the talent New Zealand retailers displayed this year.

Reflecting a rising consumer-led interest in sustainability, our second-best-read stories of 2019 were reports on the Tearfund Ethical Survey. Readers were interested in how Kiwi retailers stacked up, and how to perform well.

The many new shopping centre developments popping up around New Zealand were also a topic of interest. Westfield Newmarket, which opened in August this year, held many stores of interest for Kiwi retailers – Farmers’ new flagship, Australian retailer Coco Republic’s first New Zealand storeSpark’s new concept store and more.

A number of regulatory changes sent retailers searching for education, too. An in-depth story on new pharmacy rules was well-read, as was our coverage of the de minimis or ‘Amazon tax’ law.

Over the summer, we'll be releasing a limited number of new stories, but we'll also walk you through our greatest hits of 2019.

From NZ Retail and The Register team to yours, we hope everybody who's working through the festive season takes care of themselves and their staff, drinks lots of water, and smashes their sales targets. See you on the other side!

Picking up the scraps: The companies leading waste minimisation

In New Zealand, we discard 15.5 million tonnes of waste each year, an absurd amount for a small, agrarian, country at the bottom of the earth. Partly, the problem lies in our recycling systems – only a meager 28 percent of it is recycled. But, new radical solutions are being developed, we’ve already transformed water bottles into asphalt, plastic bags into clothes, and roofing into pavements. Plus, a company in the states, Joachim’s firm, plans to build a 53-story tower made with the waste, a vision for tall buildings and skyscrapers that could be made of plastic.
