Secret Shopper: Melissa Jack, The Best Nest

Melissa Jack is the founder of The Best Nest, one of New Zealand’s first family and lifestyle blogs. She lives in Auckland with her husband Dave and her two sons. She talks retail experience and latest purchases on this secret shopper. 

What was the last purchase you were excited about, and why? 

Aside from wine? A digital download of a 12-month blog planner that I printed and collated, and a binder and organisational tabs I purchased for it at Warehouse Stationery. I searched every brick-and-mortar store in Auckland trying to find what I needed without luck, and then found what I needed on [handmade ecommerce site] Etsy within five minutes.

Can you tell us about a retail experience you’ve had that was exciting or interesting? 

Shopping the H&M and Zara openings at Sylvia Park was something I’d been looking forward to for a long time and neither store disappointed. One opening was a brash, over the top, super fun and extravagant party, the other was a sedate, very quiet affair an hour before first trading began. The staff at both stores were amazing upon opening and still amazing when I returned weeks later.

What was your worst retail experience?

Recently I was shopping for a specific rug at a well-known homewares chain. The last one in the store was on display and after enquiring as to whether I could purchase it, I waited 15 minutes for someone to retrieve it from the display, only for him to be interrupted by another shop assistant who then informed me I could not purchase the rug as it
was the last one. I was pretty annoyed at being mucked around.

Tell me about a purchase that's solved a problem for you.

An online order from Australia arrived this week - a ridiculously huge 2.2L drink bottle from The Big Bottle, I’m terrible at staying hydrated so I’m hoping that lugging this monster around will help me to increase my water intake! So far, so good.

Can you think of any item or service that would be useful to you but doesn't exist yet?

I wish! I’d be all over it with as much entrepreneurial vim and vigour I could muster!

What’s an item that you’re planning on buying soon?

Nothing exciting. We pretty much ignored our house last year, so working on that and travelling are the priorities for 2017. Hardware for a new door we are installing and a new corner couch.

What's your favourite store? 

I’m a sucker for Country Road, Walker & Hall and Freedom Furniture.
