Swedish homewares giant Ikea has today announced it will grant experienced Ikea franchisor Ingka Group exclusive franchisee rights in New Zealand. Its offering will include stores and ecommerce.
Ingka Group is one of 11 Ikea franchisees around the world, and operates 367 Ikea stores in 30 markets. This makes it the world’s largest home furnishing retailer.
Tolga Öncü, retail operations manager, Ingka Group, says his company is aware of New Zealanders’ long-standing desire for a Kiwi Ikea.
“We are happy to meet the wish from many people for Ikea to open in New Zealand and we aim to make Ikea fully accessible, including stores and ecommerce. We see this as a long-term commitment and investment in New Zealand, building relationships with customers, suppliers and future co-workers.”
Consumers have been openly campaigning for Ikea to come to New Zealand for years now. Despite tantalising rumours, the company has kept its cards close to its chest until now.
Chief executive Jon Abrahamsson Ringof Inter Ikea Systems, Ikea’s worldwide franchisor and concept owner, underlined Ingka Group’s experience and competence.
“Ingka Group has a lot of experience operating the Ikea business across the Asia Pacific and other markets and we are very excited to bring Ikea to New Zealand together with them. Together we’ll make Ikea a loved and meaningful brand for the people in New Zealand.”
