Vote and win: Vote for our cover in the People’s Choice awards

The NZ Retail and The Register team is excited to announce that we’re one of 12 finalists to win the Magshop People’s Choice Awards for the best magazine cover of 2018. We need your help to get to the finish line, but your support won’t go unrewarded: there’s a prize pool for voters totalling more than $3,300.

Everyone who votes for the Magshop People’s Choice Award will go into the draw to win a De’longhi PrimaDonna coffee machine valued at $2,499.99, and two De’longhi Distinta Flair Breakfast packages valued at $419.98. Each package includes a silver kettle and 4-slice toaster.

The cover of our NZ Retail issue 751 was created to illustrate our feature story, Dangerous goods, which examined the issue of violent crime against retailers. With the imagery, we wanted to evoke the tension that retailers face between keeping themselves safe, and continually coming into contact with unfamiliar people:

“Welcoming strangers into your shop is at the core of bricks-and-mortar retail. Private citizens can lock their doors and bar their windows if they feel unsafe, but if you as a retailer want to keep selling your stock, you can’t avoid coming into contact with new customers. That contact comes with a risk that some of these strangers may mean you harm.”

We populated the shoot with items borrowed from around the office in the imagery – some were planned, and some were an impulse decision. The ICG Media finance department supplied most of the weaponry - you know what they say about the quiet ones - and we snatched the Dirty Dog sunglasses directly from the face of our long-suffering photographer during the shoot.
