Combining a well-loved Kiwi brand and a classic Demin label has seen a new collaboration of Madewell and Karen Walker. The new to market co-design is an example of two different styles coming together to offer something new and exciting by reusing old pieces.
The collaboration between the two dropped mid-August, with a mixture of Karen Walker’s iconic pieces repurposed to fit Madewell’s cool aesthetic. The relationship between the two has been solidified through years of mutual appreciation and Madewell’s pre-stocking of Walker’s designs.
Head designer for Madewell, Joyce Lee, explained that the values of the two brands aligned nicely, which made for an easy collaboration between the two.
“Our collaborations start with what our team is wearing and loving. We’re long-time fans of Karen Walker and her brand. We love the energy they bring to their designs through their use of color and prints and the way they reimagine denim with a novelty twist.”
Denim is the backbone of the collection, communicating the cool style Madewell bring across with its items. Yet there is no doubting Karen Walkers influence in this capsule. Floral prints, strong colours, and signature shapes of Walker’s clearly link it back to her vision.
The design process started by going through Karen Walker collections from the past two decades for inspiration, “Madewell had free rein on our archives and they pulled out many of the garments that we consider to be the best-known and best-loved,” Karen says. “For us, it was totally intriguing to see our classic designs rediscovered and reimagined by fresh eyes.”
The result is a collection of 23 pieces, including dresses, shirts, sweatshirts, skirts, jackets, jumpsuits, denim and, of course, sunglasses in coveted Karen Walker shapes.
The Madewell x Karen Walker collection is available in select Madewell U.S. stores, at www.madewell.com, Karen Walker stores in New Zealand and Tokyo and karenwalker.com.
