Menulog report shows Kiwis' ordering habits

It is common knowledge that Kiwi’s love their takeaways, yet a new report by Menulog the “Growing App-etite Report” has shown exactly what our habits are when it comes to dinning in.

With over 900 restaurant partners across New Zealand, Menulog was well positioned to record both culinary trends and New Zealand’s ordering habits. Spanning New Zealand and Australia, in 2017 Menulog delivered more than 15 million meals and grew sales by 25 percent.

Now, the report has shown exactly how its customers order food. From mobile phone usage, toilet ordering, favorite locations and even the amount of Kiwi’s who cancel plans order food at home alone.

Some highlights from the study include:

  • Eight out of 10 customers have cancelled their social plans to stay at home and get food delivered.
  • Millennials are the generation driving the ordering trend, with the group three times more likely to order food from a mobile device than Baby Boomers.
  • 70 percent of orders are placed on a mobile device
  • One out of four people have ordered food online
  • More than half of New Zealanders in full time work have ordered food to be delivered to their workplace
  • Butter Chicken and Hawaiian Pizza are the top picks for cheap options on the app
  • 100,000 Kiwis have ordered food while sitting on the toilet

The report also showed that more than 300,000 Kiwis have passed off takeaways they ordered as something they made themselves. With men twice as likely to pull the stunt.

Menulog New Zealand manager, Paul Dodds, says the unprecedented growth in the food delivery industry stems from consumer demand for convenience and choice, and digital advancements driving ordering habits.   

“Technology makes it easy and convenient for people to order food online. It means there is now a huge variety of cuisine being delivered to people’s doors. We’re also seeing people’s dining habits change as the range of cuisine continues to grow - and that is great for both consumers and local restaurants.” 

Dodds says while the report highlights how technology is shifting the way New Zealanders eat, family remains at the heart of dinner time and food is an essential ingredient for social occasions.  

“There’s nothing like food to bring people together with almost half of Kiwis saying they order food when spending quality time with friends and family,” he says.  

The data shows that online food ordering is only continuing to climb, with a heavy importance being placed on the convenience of mobile ordering.
