Barkers support Movember: It’s more than just a Mo

Movember is over and the bristly moustaches seen on upper lips nationwide have long disappeared down the sink. However, Barkers has now harnessed its Christmas shopping rush for good as it teams up with the Movember Foundation for a second crack at fundraising for men’s health.

Over the month of December 2017, the new initiative will see $1 from every Barkers transaction go towards the Movember Foundation to support men’s health.

Barkers is trying to address the significant issue of mental health during a time when it’s easy to  be distracted by the trivial elements of Christmas. However, ignoring mental health statistics isn’t quite as simple. Over the last 14 years, The Movember Foundation have raised one billion dollars for research and support into mental health, suicide, prostate cancer and testicular cancer.

 According to The Movember Foundation’s data, the state of New Zealand’s mental health needs all the support it can get.

  • One in seven kiwis will experience depression before they are 24 years old.
  • One in eight men will experience depression.
  • One in five women will experience depression.
  • Over 600 New Zealanders take their lives each year.
  • Three out of four people who take their lives are male.

December represents Barkers’ biggest sales period of the year and the company has estimated it will raise tens of thousands of dollars for the Movember Foundation. Barkers will also be auctioning off an Ultimate Barkers Pack worth over $5,000, with all proceeds going to the Movember Foundation.

A statement from Barkers makes its intention clear: “This is not a sales driver, rather it’s a chance to do some good and share the traditional spoils of Christmas with Kiwi men who need mental health support.”
