New Zealand retailers pull out all the stocks for Christmas

Christmas is on its merry way and New Zealand retailers continue to inundate the public with goodies and sweet deals. Multiple events are coming up, so here is a peek at what is to come.

Westfield shopping centres first in line, beginning the festivities this weekend on the 19th  and 20th of November. Throughout two days, Westfield centres around New Zealand host Santa arrival parades and in-centre experiences like hip hop dance performances, cartoon artistry and various other activities. Its installations of brand new decorations and Santa photography are among many other enticing aspects of the weekend.

Farmers has traditionally made the most of the festive season. This year, Farmers maintains the Christmas spirit by celebrating its 84thSanta parade party on Sunday the 26th of November. The occasion is located at Auckland’s Aotea Square and kicks off at 1pm. The afternoon includes a Santa parade with food, vendors and entertainment from 2:30pm -5pm. Farmers will round up the day with its inclusion of Peppa Pig and a performance of popular live show, Jump in Muddy Puddles.

It’s unknown whether the infamous creepy Santa above the Queen St Whitcoulls branch is due to return in 2017, but we’ve got our fingers crossed. He was created by Farmers in 1960, and graced Farmers’ Hobson St store for 30 years before falling on hard times during the 1990s. A 2009 makeover saw his unintentionally frightening appearance toned down a notch, but he was still crowned the ‘World’s creepiest Christmas ornament’ by an American news outlet in 2011.

On Friday the 24th of November, NorthWest shopping centre is running a late afternoon event from 6pm – 8pm. The occasion includes Santa’s arrival and views of the giant outdoor Christmas tree light up the town square. To put the icing on the cake, children’s entertainer Suzy Cato will be the MC for the night.

A store called final_final will host ‘The Tiny Christmas Market’ on Saturday the 25th from 10am - 4pm. The day -ong occasion gives Auckland creatives the opportunity to cram their arts and crafts into a quaint Grey Lynn studio on Dryden St. Additionally, there will be craft activities and free filter coffee from the team at Kokako.

The Xmas twilight market is running from 6:30pm -9:00pm on Thursday the 30th of November. Based in the Ellerslie War Memorial Hall, the Auckland Mama Market is a boutique for mothers providing niche, high quality products. Made by stallholders themselves, the market has 20+ stalls selling an array of products and must-haves.

In Wellington, the Sustainability Trust is creating a Made Local Christmas market. On the 25th of November, the market is open from 10:30am – 2:30pm on Forresters Lane in Courtney Place. The occasion is based on supporting local businesses and organisations who make ethical, environmentally sustainable products. The market will sell homewares, food and coffee with crafty workshops for the little squirts.

Christurch store Grown is organising a Harvest Christmas market on the 24th of December.  The event is from 8am – 1pm and invites the public to dig up their own potatoes and pick their peas on a farm held in Grown. Early bird sales are just $5 for adults and free to children, and tickets are available from eventfinda. The bucolic scenes in Sefton will be full of wholesome goods, including 50 of Canterbury’s finest artisan producers.
