Online mega mall sizes up New Zealand market

Aussie Mega Mall chief executive Darryl Reeves says he plans to target Christmas shoppers with the Kiwi site’s launch. The site collects existing retailers’ offerings into one interface, so shoppers can use its filters to browse for specific products from multiple vendors.

Payment choices are one of the filter functions, says Reeves: “If you love to shop using your Amex card because it has your favourite loyalty programme attached, then you can easily find only those merchants in a search.  The same is true for Mastercard, Visa, Diners and PayPal. Being able to deal with your favourite merchants in this way is a unique convenience.”

NZ Mega Mall will also allow shoppers to use Skype to call retailers directly. Reeves says the site has been designed with mobile shoppers in mind, saying there is no need for a keyboard to navigate anywhere.

Reeves aims to have every available retailer featured in NZ Mega Mall. The New Zealand edition is open to only New Zealand businesses, and Reeves takes a fairly hard line about the definition of a New Zealand business: “No drop shipping from China or elsewhere pretending to be a Kiwi business but where overseas owners make all the money!”

There is no cost to participating, although the site also offers premium features and facilities at a cost. Reeves says the packages are competitive: “Our most expensive package is less than the cost of your daily latte.”

He compared it favourably to Google in saying that every participating merchant gets a position on page one of search results for their category.

“Try searching for shoes on Google and see what page your business lands on! Or any other popular product for that matter!”

Asked which existing sites he viewed as competitors, Reeves was bullish about his new venture: “Clearly there are competitors but none that offer the range of facilities and conveniences offered by NZ Mega Mall.”
 

“We expect that due to the convenience, simplicity, beauty and, all-inclusive nature of ourMega Mall that Kiwis will love it and flock to it as the go-to-place for shopping.  If for no other reason than everything is in it.”
