Fast fashion giants H&M and Zara settle into their New Zealand stores

Zara will commence fitting out its first Kiwi store in Sylvia Park from today. Centre owner Kiwi Property’s general manager retail Karl Retief says it has invested $11.5 million into creating the 2,528 square metre shell.

“The new site, located in the heart of Sylvia Park, has an extensive store front which is five times the size of one of our standard fashion retailers,” Retief says. 

“We are always looking to innovate at Kiwi Property to ensure we’re delivering the very best experience for our shoppers. It brings us great pleasure to offer world renowned brands, like Zara, and we are thrilled to be chosen as the first choice of the New Zealand retail centres for this outstanding brand.”

Zara’s global competitor H&M is also planning on opening its first New Zealand outlet at Sylvia Park. Its store is also enormous, covering 2,300 square metres over two levels.

“We are eager to open the doors to the first H&M New Zealand store later this year,” says Daniel Lattemann, sales manager for H&M New Zealand. “We look forward to introducing fashion-loving H&M Kiwi customers to our exciting offers and we promise it will be worth the wait.”

H&M previewed some product at a Parnell location two weeks ago. H&M Australia PR manager Liz Cave then confirmed the company was hiring staff for its Kiwi operation but was unable to comment on further progress.

The company has still not revealed when it will open the store, but has confirmed the launch will be during spring 2016. This bodes well for consumers anticipating H&M’s collaboration line with designer label Kenzo – Cave says if H&M New Zealand opens before the collab’s launch on November 3, the line will be offered.
