UPDATED: Ben & Jerry’s first New Zealand store to open in Ponsonby

Kiwis will be treated to 18 of Ben & Jerry’s infamous ice cream flavours, which include Chunky Monkey, Strawberry Cheesecake and Choc Chip Cookie Dough.

The shop will be located at 160 Ponsonby Rd.

According to its website, the shop will be open 11am to 11pm every day except Friday and Saturday, where it will stay open until 12am.

Ice cream fanatics who can’t get enough of the stuff will be be happy to know that Ben & Jerry’s take home tubs will also be stocked in a number of ‘premium’ retail outlets.

This is the first time the brand has ever entered New Zealand. It launched across the ditch in Australia in 2009.

Ben & Jerry's country business lead of marketing Kylie Le-May says the company has previously been innundated with requests to bring its ice cream to New Zealand.

Ben & Jerry's

The famous ice cream brand was founded by Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield in 1978.

The friends had one certification: a $5 correspondence course in ice cream making. They opened their first shop in a gas station in Vermont in the US.

Interestingly, Cohen has severe anosmia, which means he has a lack of smell and taste.

Instead, he relies on the ‘mouth feel’ of the ice cream flavour.

Because of this, chunks of fruit, nuts and chocolate were used in its ice cream flavours. Its chunks have since become one of the most iconic features about the ice cream.

By 1979, Cohen and Greenfield were wholesaling pints of ice creams out of Cohen’s campervan. Now, the company operates in more than 30 countries worldwide.
