Countdown’s acting managing director Pat McEntee says having free fruit in stores encourage kids to eat healthy snacks and help parents while shopping.
“We first tried free fruit for kids at our Countdown Botany store in Auckland in August. Customers told us how much they loved this idea, so we wanted to take it nationwide,” McEntee says.
“We know it can be a challenge to do the shopping with hungry kids in tow, so we thought this would make the shopping experience a little easier for families, while also encouraging kids to eat fresh fruit.”
The fruit will available in clearly marked baskets in the produce section of stores.
Fruit will be replenished throughout the day and the fruit will vary. This week, it’s apples and bananas.
A photo of the fruit trialled at Botany trial posted on The Hits NZ Facebook page received more than 100,000 likes and over 17,000 shares.
Countdown posted a similar photo to its Facebook page earlier this week, which has received over 18,000 likes.
