Retail workplaces are among New Zealand's best

IBM says 65 percent of the 2015 finalists were continuing a winning streak from last year. It reports that big improvements were made this year by organisations scoring in the bottom 25 percent, demonstrating that the programme can result in real benefits. It says progress was made in the areas of clarity of organisational vision; feedback and performance measurement; and employee recognition for great work.

“It’s clear from the survey results that the organisations taking on board the feedback from their people and translating it into action are seeing positive results,” says Leighton Abbot, senior consultant, IBM Smarter Workforce for New Zealand. “We are really encouraged to see that more New Zealanders are feeling motivated and enthused about their work. This in turn is lifting staff perceptions of customer service delivery and organisational success.”


The winners of these awards will be announced at an awards dinner on 5 November in Auckland.

Of the larger retail finalists, each has a well-deserved reputation for investing in its staff. The Warehouse Group, which owns Warehouse Stationery, spends $6 million each year on its 'career retailer' wage programme and has a strong in-store career path structure in place. It has recently introduced a policy allowing time off for staff affected by domestic violence.

Flight Centre employs over 15,000 people in 11 countries, and is one of only two companies to achieve membership into the IBM Kenexa Best Workplaces Survey’s 10-Year League for those who have made the survey’s finals more than 10 times. Its New Zealand managing director Chris Greive told NZ Retail magazine that staff are critical to Flight Centre's success.

“For Flight Centre, our company is our people. The company has managed to build an enjoyable workplace, as well as a very profitable business. The company’s (global) profit was A$378 million (year ended June 2014) – this profit is a by-product of looking after your people well.”

Recruiter Alen Levis spoke of Trade Me's powerful workplace culture when he visited the offices in Wellington for a tour. He was impressed by how it manages to foster mutually beneficial relationships between all staff, and how those at the top of its corporate hierarchy work hard to remain down-to-earth.
