Customers’ energy drives Top Shop winners for the Lower North Island

Team leader Christian Hamilton says his staff of six has a built-in advantage due to the nature of their offering: “Not many people come into a travel agent’s unhappy.”

He says the team feeds off the customer’s energy. It is important to remember that each holiday is special to that particular customer, Hamilton says.

“We’ve realised that the person who comes in to book a family holiday to the Gold Coast might have saved five years for that and it’s an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime trip.”

He recommends that other retailers should consider their philosophies and stick by them. Flight Centre Chews Lane’s philosophies include prioritising the customer’s needs; taking responsibility and owning their actions; incentivising one another, and striving for egalitarianism.

Retail NZ chief executive Mark Johnston said at the awards last night that the judges who visited Flight Centre Chews Lane were impressed the friendly and helpful staff and their excellent first-hand experience of the packages on offer.

“All the finalists and winners should be very proud of what they’ve achieved, but I offer a special congratulations to the team at Flight Centre Chews Lane, which took top honours against a tough pool of six finalists in the National/Multi-Store category, and was also awarded the title of Overall Regional Top Shop for the Central North Island,” Johnston said.

The category for the regional overall winner is sponsored by .99 and NZME. Advertising agency .99 has long specialised in retail. Its managing director Ben Goodale was a member of the judging panel.

“We applaud the Wellington Top Shop winners, all of whom demonstrated an abundance of expertise, innovation and success,” Goodale says.

The runner up for the overall winner category was Wellington’s Let Liv, a homewares and accessories store on Hunter St.

Selena Campbell from Feilding’s Rosebowl Café was named as the ServiceIQ Retail Professional of the Year for the Lower North Island.

She and the team from Flight Centre Chews Lane will compete against other regional winners for the National Supreme Awards in Christchurch on 3 September.

Military-style semi-automatics ban announced

As of 3pm on March 21, a wide range of semi-automatic weapons have been reclassified under section 74A(c) of the Arms Act as requiring an E endorsement on a firearms license. This means they can no longer be sold to those with A-category gun licenses, and their purchase now requires police approval.

Hunting & Fishing New Zealand voluntarily pulls military-style assault weapons from sale

In the wake of the attack on Christchurch’s Muslim community on March 15, strong calls for changes to New Zealand’s gun last have been made. Trade Me was the first retailer to act, halting the sale of all semi-automatic weapons on its platform, and it has now been joined by Hunting & Fishing New Zealand.
