Te Horo jam business bought by Prolife Foods

Prolife Foods is one of New Zealand’s largest importers, manufacturers and marketers of staples such as nuts, dried fruit, snack foods, cereals and confectionery products. It was founded in 1984 as a “garage business” through which owners Bernie and Kaye Crosby sold hot nuts to health food shops and independent retailers, but the pair soon diversified into catering lines; canned goods; oils; herbs and spices.

It launched its own-brand title Value Pack in 1990, followed by Alison’s Panty, a line of bulk bin items for supermarkets endorsed by Kiwi cookbook queen Alison Holst. Premium snack bar brand Mother Earth was acquired in 2008, followed by confectionary brand Donovans Chocolate in 2011. Mother Earth has since launched into Australia and Asian markets.

Prolife Foods CEO, Andrew Smith, says the company first got into breakfast spreads last year with a range of Mother Earth-branded honeys and peanut butters. He says Te Horo jam is a great addition to the line-up.

“We are delighted to expand our portfolio into the jam business with such a fantastic product made from local New Zealand produce.”

Te Horo jam has been made on a family farm on the Kapiti Coast since 1991, and uses only New Zealand fruit. There are eight jam varieties in its range, and its awards include a Cuisine Artisan Award in 2012 and a New Zealand Food Grocer’s Award in 2010.
