This year’s judging panel includes Andrew Parsons, New Zealand’s only professor of retailing from AUT, former Air New Zealand CEO Rob Fyfe, James Pascoe owner Anne Norman and Icehouse CEO Andy Hamilton.

Newmarket Business Association CEO Mark Knoff-Thomas says the calibre of entries this year has been outstanding.

Entries were up 100 percent on the year prior.

This is the fourth year the awards have been held. There are now a greater number of categories for each business sector.

Best Ugly Bagels, Glamour Boutique and Michael Holmes Premium Eyewear are all finalists in the People’s Choice Award category, which received over 2000 votes.

Glamour Boutique managing director Charone Mackessack says the store’s point of difference is staff welcome people into the store as they would their own homes.

“Every single people that comes in is treated like gold, as we want them to come back and become return customers,” Mackessack says.

The store’s manager and creative director Hannah Read is also nominated for the young business person of the year award.

Mackessack says Read is only 23, so her achievements so far are pretty amazing.

“She’s a boutique manager, so she’s running the store and running the staff meeting targets and doing everything that has to do with buying,” she says.

“On the other side, she’s also our creative director and looks after social media platforms and what were presenting to our followers, so that is a massive job as well.”

She says it’s a huge benefit for Glamour Boutique, because Read is absorbed in every aspect of the business.

As for what she wished someone had told her when she started her company, she says two things are key: finding the right team and being knowledgeable about things like point of sale software.

“It’s taking the time to find the right people to work within the team so that everyone is on the same page with where you want the business to go,” she says.

“I also wish someone had spoken to me about behind the scenes systems, like POS and accounting software, because that is something we’ve only just implemented in the last six months and it’s been amazing.”

Other retail finalists include I Love Ugly, Overland, Michael Holmes Premium Eyewear, Modes and Piccadilly Shoes.

The awards will be held at the Auckland War Memorial Museum on Friday 19 June.
