Sir Michael and his wife Lady Christine joined daughter Emma, who is deputy chair of Michael Hill International, to attend the official opening. The business entered the American market in 2008, and sales from its eight US stores rose by 14.2 percent after Michael Hill ran its ‘We’re for Love’ ad campaign during the Superbowl.
The clips in the campaign were filmed on the streets of New York. Sir Michael says the campaign helped to set the scene for the arrival of two stores to open in the city.
The second New York store is scheduled to open later this year in Roosevelt Field.
“We have been so looking forward to sharing the brand and jewellery with New Yorkers,” says Sir Michael.
“We are all so passionate about making this endeavour a success. It really has been a labour of love to get to this point and establish a presence in a city like New York. For both jewellery and romance, this city really is a good as it gets.”
The new store will feature both the Michael Hill and Emma & Roe ranges of jewellery.
Michael Hill International currently has over 290 stores around New Zealand, Australia, Canada and the US.
