Red Bull and Warriors new can, plus other funny brand collaborations that caught our eye

The touch points featured on the can include the renowned Pukana face, which the site says shows the “true warrior spirit”; the word “loyalty” as a tribute to fans backing the team; and korus to represent the club’s past, present and future.

This is the first time the energy drink company has collaborated with another company and created a custom-made can.

New Zealand artist Dave Burke is the person behind the design. Burke has also designed many of the team’s iconic jerseys.

The overall design is based on a tattoo, which Red Bull says is appropriate given many fans and players sport them.

Fans seem to have taken warmly to the limited edition can on social media, with most praising the can’s design and taking pride in the rugby league team.

We know the Vodafone Warriors aren’t a food (luckily, they didn’t try conjuring up a flavour to represent the Warriors, like the team’s dressing room that “stinks of sweat and Deep Heat”) but we thought this would be a good chance to revisit some of the interesting food items that have resulted from collaborations.

Classic Kiwi food and drink staples are often incorporated into other products in the hope that the love felt for those iconic items will be felt for the limited edition one.

This isn’t always the case.

One of these is Whittakers and L&P short-lived collaboration: L&P chocolate.

The white chocolate with popping candy and a distinct L&P flavour was touted as “The accident that New Zealand has been waiting for”.

 Opinions were divided over the popping chocolate.

There was also Bluebird’s interesting venture into paua fritter chips.

The company decided to leave it up to the public to provide a flavour idea, which ended up being a huge mistake.

Across the ditch, Vegemite and Cadbury have recently joined forces, and the response on social media is surprisingly positive.

While you’d think the strange flavour fusion of Vegemite and chocolate would have a gut-wrenching reaction for most, people on Twitter have said it’s actually quite tasty. Who would’ve thought?

Following a similar vein, two well-known food brands, Abe’s Bagel Crisps and Marmite, have teamed up and created Marmite-flavoured crisps.

Fonterra also launched a Pineapple Lumps flavoured Primo milk a few years back. According to Fonterra, sales for the drink did surprisingly well.

Casting our eye worldwide, some other interesting (or nauseating) collaborations around the world include Wasabi Kit Kats, Tuna Mayonnaise Doritos, and Cucumber Pepsi.

The majority of the aforementioned weird collaborations originated in Japan, but maybe we shouldn’t be too quick to judge others cultural differences.

Those who love Wasabi Kit Kats may be gagging at the thought of L&P-flavoured chocolate.
