Herne Bay welcomes $40m Countdown metro store

Construction is almost underway for a 1600m2 Countdown Metro store in New Zealand’s wealthiest suburb, Herne Bay.

The $40m build is located on the corner of Kelmarna Ave and Jervois Rd and will open its doors to the public in 2022. Countdown’s acting general manager property, Matt Grainger, is thrilled with the opportunity to bring a unique, smaller sized supermarket to the Herne Bay community.

“We’ve seen a shift in how our customers are shopping, with many in urban areas moving towards smaller, more frequent shops, and easy-eating/ quick to prepare meal options,” says Grainger.

“The recent changes to the Herne Bay area, and the way customers are now shopping, have been a key influence on the design and range we will be offering with this new Metro store.”

Due to the smaller format of the store, shoppers will be provided with plenty of pantry staples, ready made meals, fresh sandwiches, salads, healthy snack options and take home dinners.

The new store will feature a lower emission refrigeration system, LED lighting, undercover parking and bike parks. Employment wise, Countdown Herne Bay will create 80 new jobs.

With construction starting soon, the Herne Bay public will witness the store come to life over the next year.
