This month, NorthWest Shopping center’s Te Pumanawa Square welcomes a new entertainment establishment in the form of an upmarket billiards gastropub. Created under the desire to bring people together for delicious food, drinks, and of course pool, Slate offers a unique experience within a highly competitive industry. Although launching during a Covid-reality, owner Matt Edwards says his pool hall will focus on customer experience and providing a safe and friendly environment for everyone.
Billiard gastropubs are a rarity in New Zealand and Matt Edwards was up for the challenge of bringing one to the West of Auckland. From the age of 12, Edwards has always held a passion for pool, entering national events against adults and becoming number one in the country at only 21 years old. It is his love of the sport and the large gap in the market that has led to the creation of Slate.
“Pool has always been my passion and I enjoy sharing this with others by providing a facility that has quality pool tables, food, and drinks! It makes it much easier to wake up in the morning and go to work when you are doing what you love.”
With the arrival of Covid-19 and the subsequent Alert Levels the country has been under, many bars and restaurants have struggled to maintain business. Building an entertainment venue from scratch during these times of uncertainty has been challenging for Edwards, yet has not altered his glass half full mentality.
“We are solution focused and enjoy challenges. It is about adapting to the environment and making it work.
“In difficult times it’s even more important to be enjoying yourself. We think our offering will make people happy, having created lasting memories. Who doesn’t enjoy a fun game of pool, delicious food, and good drinks?”
The boutique-style eatery boasts craft beers, a full menu offering from ribs to gourmet pizzas and burgers, and houses six full-size pool tables for everyone and anyone to enjoy.
For those considering opening their own hospitality business, Edwards says it takes a lot of work but the end result is worth it.
“If it’s something you’re passionate about then grab it by the horns and don’t look back!”
