Keeping stores clean: Accepting payments but not germs

In an environment where retailers are being encouraged to thoroughly clean all high-touch surfaces by the Ministry of Health, Eftpos New Zealand has released guidelines on how to clean your POS machines.

The spread of Covid-19 means retailers are facing challenging times. Retail NZ has released a series of guidelines offering advice, and is also taking calls via its helpline: 0800 472 472.

Best-practice advice for keeping customers and staff safe in your store includes disinfecting all high-touch surfaces. The US CDC has endorsed this list of disinfectants which can be used on surfaces against Covid-19 – it also recommends diluted sodium hypochlorite solutions and alcohol solutions with at least 70 percent alcohol.

Among the high-touch surfaces in retail stores includes your payment terminal. Eftpos New Zealand has put out this guide on how to clean your machines without damaging them, pointing out that, first of all, accepting contactless payments cuts down on the opportunities for customers to transfer germs onto your machine via touch.

Eftpos says terminals should be cleaned by wiping them with a lightly damp microfibre cloth. Only water should be used for the initial clean, after which the terminal can be disinfected using an alcohol-based wipe or cleaner.

It cautions that you shouldn’t pour any liquid directly onto the device, and bleach, thinner, trichloroethylene, or ketone-based solvents may damage it.

Stay safe out there and keep washing your hands!
