We kicked off the year with an in-depth piece of explainer journalism picking apart the complex world of multi-level marketers. Are they retailers? Unclear. Do they have an array of sales techniques that retailers could benefit from adopting? Absolutely.
Next, we considered the outlook for big-box retailers, which have been under threat internationally. Will shops have to shut when Amazon comes to town? How will the coming arrival of Ikea change the Kiwi market?

In August, we put on our glad rags and attended New Zealand Fashion Week. We produced dozens of short-form stories for the Concept to Closet content hub, and examined the health of New Zealand’s apparel industry.
We then zipped off to the regions to see how tourism was affecting small-town retailers. It’s New Zealand’s leading export industry and overlaps with retail in many places.
We rounded out the year with a look at which significant international retailers launched into New Zealand in 2019.
