The Westfield shopping centre formerly known as 277 has been closed for two years as $790 million renovation has taken place. Now, stage one will open at 9am on Thursday morning.
The renovation has seen Westfield Newmarket spread down Broadway and across Mortimer Pass into a new-build area which includes anchor tenant Farmers. The two buildings are linked on two levels by an ambitious glass airbridge.
“For Scentre Group in New Zealand, this is a first, to have a two-level airbridge connecting two buildings,” says centre manager Paul Gardner.
Gardner characterises Westfield Newmarket as having been a “fast build”, with ground broken on the new section just 18 months ago.
When it’s open, Westfield Newmarket will boast more than 200 shops and 2700 car parks. The first stage encompasses around 40 store. Much-anticipated openings include Farmers, Chemist Warehouse and Australian new arrival Coco Republic. There’s also Kathmandu, Rebel Sport and Under Armour, as well as Beauty & Beyond, Dangerfield, Bras N Things, The Cosmetic Clinic, 2 Degrees, Spark, The Coffee Club, Hulu Cat, Amore Gelato and more.
Gardner says he expects the two buildings will eventually come to be identified by their respective anchor tenants – Farmers for the new building, and Australian department store David Jones for the former 277.
