The Retail NZ Awards: What does it take to be a winning retailer?

Take this time to shine with the upcoming Retail NZ awards, a chance to show the retail industry what makes your business stand out. The Retail NZ awards is open now for entry, with hopeful participants encouraged to put their stores forward to decide where they shine. With an expert judging panel assessing everything from customer experience, innovation, visual merchandising, investment in people, and omnichannel offerings, there is plenty of opportunities for small, medium and large businesses to get involved.

After entering and the judging process, the lucky nominees will join fellow retailers for a not to be missed night at the Retail NZ Summit and Gala Dinner on the 23rd of July at Sky City Convention Centre.

The event is the perfect opportunity to get your store noticed, 2017 winner Global Baby won two awards, an unspringing business that got the judges vote, even while operating as a SME.

What does it take to be a winning retailer?

Anita Affleck’s passion for her store Global Baby is inspirational. It’s always been her dream to run her own business – now that she’s living the dream. She stays engaged, and responsive of what her customers want.

In 2017’s Retail NZ Awards, Global Baby won two awards, and came runner up for two awards. The secrets to Anita’s success? She’s a big team player, embraces innovation, and keeps her finger on the pulse of retail.

Anita is fully dedicated – while pregnant, she worked about 80 days in row! Her business was growing fast. During her maternity leave, she saw how amazingly her team was doing, and felt confident in taking a step back.

Anita says she “wants people to want to work here”. She recruits amazing individuals and encourages her young team to play to their strengths. They’re enthusiastic ambassadors for Global Baby products, and she can really trust them.

To stay engaged with her team, she always makes time to have a full day a week with them, and she’ll stay in touch daily. They also have an online group, where they organise shifts, share jokes and showcase customer feedback. Monthly, the whole team meets via video call, and together look at business goals, discuss results and targets, and learn about exciting new products coming in-store.

Always Improving

Anita is constantly scoping out her business’s strengths and pain points. She finds solutions to streamline processes, and has rebuilt her website a couple of times. Anita says this year’s Boxing Day will much easier to manage, since she’s got on board with an online point-of-sales system.

Her store experience is enhanced through integrating her web and physical stores. Her team carry tablets, showing customers comprehensive details, and positive reviews of what’s popular.

Anita loves knowing what’s going on in retail and stays connected with podcasts like Small Business Big Marketing. She loves immersing herself in the “buzz of shopping” and checking out the local high streets. 

What’s next?
