Retail year book 2018: Part six

The ‘Wishful thinking’ award for best rumoured arrival:

Winner: Ikea

All year there has been whispers of an Ikea finally opening on our shores, from expected logistical efforts and even guesses about where the flagship would be. There is already a brand awareness in New Zealand, and international stories about the large stores filled with collections have only fuelled the desires and rumours for the Swedish chain. Yet New Zealand’s geographic location has proved a hinderance again, as many experts say shipping low volumes to a remote country like New Zealand is costly and such overhead will be passed onto consumers.

Runner up: Costco

‘Best ditch hop’ award for the most well-received Australian brand:

Winner: Chemist Warehouse

Early last year, Australian brand Chemist Warehouse sailed to our shores, adding its Auckland flagship to its 400 other stores internationally. The store’s website is owned and operated by the EPharmacy group, but the company itself is family-owned. It brought with it its unbeatable low prices, and Kiwis’ love of a bargain meant it was welcomed with open arms. Just six months after Chemist Warehouse opened its Mt Albert store, a second outlet in Botany opened to the public in April. A third outlet in Manukau Westfield is currently under construction. Azman Haroon, pharmacist and director of Chemist Warehouse New Zealand, says the launch into the New Zealand market has exceeded expectations.

Runner up: Catch of the Day
