Peek inside Freedom Furniture’s new Newmarket flagship

Freedom Furniture has finished a $1 million-plus renovation of its 23-year-old flagship in Newmarket. The refurbished store opened at the start of this month.

The renovations involved adding an extra 600 square metres of floor space into the concept store. Like Freedom’s other stores, it lays out its merchandise in displays that mimic private homes, with the flagship boasting an open-plan kitchen and design studio. It will also emphasise the brand’s furniture customisation.

Freedom Furniture managing director Debbie Ridling says Freedom predicts Newmarket will be “New Zealand’s shopping mecca” by 2020. The revamp coincides with Westfield’s $790 million redevelopment of the 277 shopping centre.

Ridling says Freedom’s investment in its Newmarket store underpins its commitment to bricks and mortar retail.

“While digital continues to grow exponentially furniture and homewares is still a very tactile shopping experience for our customers. We know that people are looking for an experience, not just a product.”

“We’re making a commitment to the shopper of tomorrow and the promise of the area becoming a retail hub. With Westfield at the southern end and Freedom at the top, we’re expecting the strip to be buzzing with foot traffic.”
