Bayfair shopping centre has officially opened the first phase of its $115 million redevelopment, with the opening day seeing thousands of feet through in anticipation of the new stores.

As part of this first phase, 30 new stores joined Bayfair’s retail offering, bringing new retailers to the Bay, the area is welcoming in Seed Heritage, The Source Bulk Foods, Peter Alexander and Cotton On Mega.

Moving into Bayfair for the first time are Dotti, Macpac, Portmans, Jacqui E and The Cosmetic Clinic. As Bayfair works through the current retail mix during the development phase, Rodd & Gunn and Max will expand into brand-new, larger stores and Merric, The Coffee Club and Dominos will return.

On completion in 2019, the development will see the centre become a fully integrated, single-level enclosed shopping centre, with an expanded footprint of 42,000 square metres and an alfresco dining precinct to complement what will be the largest cinema complex, United Cinemas in the Bay of Plenty.

Many anxious shoppers waited outside in the early hours of the morning to be first into the area, with reported crowds heading towards new international retailers such as Mecca Maxima.

With plans to finish the next phase in 2019, the expansion will increase its size by 9,000 square metres to a total of 42,000 square metres. It will house 150 stores, serviced by 1,800 carparks.
