Barkers’ Clothing Ltd has announced a move into womenswear with the acquisition of Max Fashions Ltd.
Barkers’ has gone into the conditional agreement to own 100 percent of the Max chains, of which there are 40 stores. The new group that will emerge from the acquisition will combine to reach 600 staff and 70 retail stores, it also means Max will stay as a New Zealand owned company, giving staff within the company further chance to progress.
Barkers’ leadership team have extensive retail experience in fashion retail and strategically, Max Fashions Ltd. aligns well for the company’s procession into womenswear, Barkers’ CEO and new group CEO Jamie Whiting says.

“We know the Max brand has an enormous following in New Zealand and a very loyal customer base, so we’re excited to help push the brand into a new era. We are proud to have acquired Max and we look forward to working alongside their experienced team and seeing how we can help each other’s brands to grow ever stronger.”
Both chains will remain separate brands identities and continue to run in separate independent Auckland based offices. The move will see Barkers’ CEO Jamie Whiting move to the role of CEO for the whole group, while COO Glenn Cracknell has moved to CEO of Barkers’.
