A lesbian couple in Pukekohe have recently launched New Zealand’s first LGBTQ ecommerce gift store, Same Love Gifts.
“It’s not just about selling products for me,” says Sarah Davies.
In her day job, Davies is an engagement manager for another company, and she’s training as a celebrant as well. The gift store ties in nicely with her desire to help others celebrate significant events in their lives.
Davies fronts the business while her partner Sue Cobb supports her with behind-the-scenes work like wrapping stock and assisting with sourcing.
Davies hopes the store will make life easier for people who may be invited to a same-sex wedding and not know what kind of present to bring. It can accommodate all budgets, with items ranging from cake slicers to coasters. A childrens’ range is about to be released.
The majority of goods are designed by Davies herself. Some are imported direct from the manufacturers in China, while around 50 percent of the stock is made in New Zealand.
Presentation is important to Same Love Gifts, with all goods arriving wrapped in tissue with a ribbon-tied box.
Instead of spending on promotions and marketing, Same Love Gifts channels its marketing budget into charity. She’s also working on a series of projects aimed at supporting LGBTQ teenagers in schools around New Zealand.
“That’s my way of marketing, doing the charity work and hopefully getting our name around New Zealand.”
Davies’ big goal is to have Same Love Gifts featured on US talk show The Ellen DeGeneres Show by the end of 2019.
“Hopefully, I’m going to send her the perfect gift and she’ll invite me over.”
