Across its Auckland stores the premium grocer is encouraging customers to bring their own plastic containers to fill them with food from the deli, butchery and seafood counters.

Farro has long had a foot in the door of sustainability, even reducing the amount of landfill it sends off by 75 percent over the last three years. A move which was done with the help of suppliers what produce sustainable and compostable packaging.

“Introducing BYO containers is another step towards reducing plastic waste,” says Janene Draper, co-founder of Farro.

“We are always looking for tangible ways to live more sustainably and are encouraging Farro customers to take this step and try using their own containers. This year Farro moved to 100 percent compostable bags at our checkouts and there continues to be an increasing shift towards our customers using Farro’s reusable shopping bags.”

As Farro takes further steps to become sustainable, select Countdown locations have now completed phased out single use plastic bags, with the government moving to have all single use plastics banned by next year.
