The Warehouse introduces global competitive pricing through AI

Showing the future of retail is closer than ever, The Warehouse has introduced ‘Snap and Shop’. An artificial intelligence app that allows customers to take photos of products they like and match them with offers from The Warehouse.

The app comes from the retailer’s partnership with Google Cloud, which allows the app user to instantly match photographed items to those within its own catalogue. This not only allows potential customers to be provided with an item like what they’re after, but also means TWG can optimize pricing.

Warehouse chief information officer, Timothy Kasbe, says AI is also being used by the retailer to price tens of thousands of non-labelled products, taking into account variables such as size, weight and material.

“We input the product specifications into Google Cloud’s platform, it searches for comparable matches all over the world and instantly comes back with pricing which is fair and accurate for the New Zealand market.

“This eliminates guesswork and estimation in determining pricing, which makes The Warehouse more competitive. It also gives us insights into how a specific product is marketed, so we can adjust the images or messaging we use to get a better result,” Kasbe says.

The demo of the app shows how easy it is to be directed to the retailer’s own products, with the app now rated a New Zealand number one shopping app in AppStore.
