Aussie budget site Catch Group finds favour with Kiwi shoppers

Australian company Catch Group has achieved over $200,000 of sales per week in New Zealand in its first three months offering bargain website Catch of the Day here.

Catch Group tested the waters in New Zealand via Pumpkin Patch, which it purchased in 2017 and relaunched as a pureplay site in December, and listings on Trade Me.

Catch’s main offering, bargain website Catch of the Day, was launched in New Zealand in March. The site has around 40,000 products across a wide range of categories, from FMCG products to footwear and small appliances.

Catch Group chief executive Nati Harpaz says he was confident the launch would be a success, but the whole team is surprised by the extent of its triumph.

“We are seeing some outstanding results already; within three months, New Zealand has become a  higher revenue generator than we had accounted for, it really has exceeded our expectations,” Harpaz says.

“Great deals that you just can’t say no to are part of our DNA and as more Kiwis learn that they can find everything they want and anything they need at incredibly low prices, we are going to see even greater growth. Our deals are unbeatable and we are delighted to bring them into New Zealand.”

Catch of the Day is most popular in New Zealand’s urban areas, with most frequent customers hailing from Auckland (45 percent); Christchurch (13 percent); and Wellington (11 percent).  Nearly 70 percent of its customers are female, and 60 percent are aged between 25-44. The Millennial cohort are well represented, with one third of shoppers aged 25-34.

Harpaz reports Finish Quantum dishwashing tablets have been the most popular sale item to date, followed by discounted technology such as Sony noise cancelling headphones and Dyson vacuum cleaners.
