Amazon opens in Australia today

Amazon appears to have opened the doors to its Australian warehouse. The tech giant moves into the Australian market with its online site today as it warns third party sellers to prepare for orders.

Amazon appears to have opened the doors to its Australian warehouse. The tech giant moves into the Australian market with its online site today as it warns third party sellers to prepare for orders.

The opening comes just in time for US-led shopping holidays Black Friday and Cyber Monday, with no doubt that Amazon will extend its discounts to its newest Australian consumers.

According to The Sydney Morning Herald, third party suppliers were warned by Amazon to start expecting to take orders from this afternoon.

As its virtual doors swing open, the retail landscape in Australia will never be the same. After a lengthy period of set-up largely shrouded in secrecy, it’s now confirmed that the global retail giant will begin selling products directly to Australian customers as of today.

It is more of a soft launch as retailers get into the swing of selling off the site, Amazon is expected to make an official marketing campaign to announce the opening.

It’s not known exactly what products will be available in the soft launch, but it’s believed that as many as 500 retailers will be part of Amazon’s Australian marketplace from day one.

The store is located in Melbourne’s Dandenong South, where a large warehouse sits along the skyline. Amazon is heavily involved with both Black Friday and Cyber Monday, and as analysts expected, the tech giant opened just a day before the two events.

Right now the AU site still has only books available, but it is expect to switch over to the new ‘everything store’ site by 2pm Australian time (4pm local).

The US Amazon is offering Black Friday deals of up to 60 percent off select items.
