Stats NZ latest retail trade results

Stats NZ have released its latest retail trade quarter numbers. The results for the quarter show a rise in retail trade by 1.4 percent.

The retail trade survey is for the latest quarter starting March 2017. Total sales rose 1.4 percent, or $309 million.

The food and beverage industry had the largest increase in the series, up 4.6 percent ($117 million). The record increase reflects the influx of sporting fans and visitors for the World Masters Games and the Lions rugby tour held in New Zealand during the June quarter. This is a 0.1 increase, or $8 million from the previous year.

Accommodation volumes rose 6.1 percent. This was the largest increase for this industry in three years.

Department stores, apparel retailing, liquor, and recreational retailing all saw a steady increase compared to the same quarter in 2016.

Supermarket sales saw a decrease, yet specialised food retailing excluding alcohol saw an improvement.

The value of sales in the North Island rose 1.7 percent ($273 million) in the June 2017 quarter, after a 2.2 percent ($358 million) rise in the March 2017 quarter. While the value of sales in the South Island rose 0.6 percent ($33 million).

The Auckland region dominated the rise in the North Island, with an increase of 2.2 percent ($179 million).
