Apple releases iPhone 8 and iPhone X

The talk of the town this week was the release of the iPhone 8 and the iPhone X. The two models differ in technology aspects and in price, but has Apple’s choice to release the phones around the same time hurt possible sales?

The talk of the town this week was the release of the iPhone 8 and the iPhone X. The two models differ in technology aspects and in price, but has Apple’s choice to release the phones around the same time hurt possible sales?

As Apple likely predicted, it appears a large number of prospective iPhone buyers are waiting until the iPhone X goes up for preorder in late October rather than purchasing the more readily available iPhone 8, which launches Friday.

It makes sense that the iPhone X — which, despite its UDS$999 starting price, does sport some impressive tech — would cannibalize iPhone 8 sales. That’s likely why Apple spaced out the release dates of the two phones this fall instead of letting customers decide between them immediately.

The iPhone 8 is more of a “S” upgrade than a full-blown overhaul.

Having a large number of holdouts, including those who may have otherwise bought the iPhone 8, certainly won’t make buying the X easier.

So, what is different between the two models – besides a few hundred dollars.

Design: The iPhone X has a new glass wrap around technology and has ditched the home button. While the iPhone 8 looks similar to its previous models, the X resembles more its android competitors. The iPhone X ditches the Home button entirely, meaning no more Touch ID. Instead, the device uses Face ID, or facial recognition.

Size: The iPhone X comes in around 5.8 inches with a 1125 x 2436-pixel resolution screen, while the standard 8 (not the 8 plus) weighs in at 4.7 inches with a 750×1334 pixel resolution.

Display: Apple has fitted a much larger display in the iPhone X, this is clearly a big selling point of the new release. The 5.8-inch wraparound screen of the iPhone X is around 25 percent larger than the 4.7-inch panel included in the iPhone 8 smartphone.

Camera: Camera technology was always likely to be a focus of the 2017 iPhone releases, and this was definitely the case once the iPhone X and iPhone 8 emerged. The big difference between the two devices is that the aperture of the iPhone X is improved over the iPhone 8, delivering improved shooting in darker conditions.

Battery: An improved battery life was promised for both models, although the iPhone 8 plus holds the longest battery time, even over the X. However, X offers wireless charging on a specifically designed plate.

There is no doubt that Apple will shift large numbers of iPhone 8 units, particularly as most of the major features from the iPhone X device appear in this smartphone.

iPhone completists will undoubtedly opt for the iPhone X, but there is plenty to be said for the iPhone 8 as well, and it arguably represents the better value for money purchase of the two.
