Retailers celebrate their industry at the 2017 Top Shop Awards

Even the most extravagant window display had nothing on the splendor of Retail NZ’s 30th Top Shop awards. A wide range of industry participants, from sales assistants to chief executives, raised a glass to the ongoing health of the retail industry at the awards, which were held at Auckland’s Sky City after an exhaustive judging process. They followed six regional events.

Hawke’s Bay jeweller Grieve Diamond Jeweller from Hastings was named as New Zealand’s supreme Top Shop. The business also scooped up the Small Retailer Omnichannel Award.

“Tonight’s award is recognition of the outstanding omnichannel experience offered by Grieve Diamond Jeweller and the fantastic customer experience in the store,” says Retail NZ’s general manager for public affairs Greg Harford. “Grieve Diamond Jeweller was first established in 1934, so has a long history, and Hastings should be proud that one of its iconic retailers has received a national honour.”

Across New Zealand, more than 209,000 people are employed across 27,000 retail businesses, Harford says. He noted retail’s increasing diversity, and the need for retailers to engage across both physical and digital channels while providing outstanding service, great products and prices.

Robert Griffiths, owner of Grieve Diamond Jeweller, sent his son James Griffiths and James’ wife Kyleigh to accept the supreme award while he minded the shop back in Hastings.

“Someone had to keep the doors open down here,” he says.

The business has a multi-generational heritage, being started in 1934 by Griffiths’ wife Barb’s grandfather in Gisborne. The founder moved his store to Auckland, then Wanganui before settling in Hastings. Barb Griffiths’ father ran Grieve Diamond Jeweller next, before she and Griffiths took over during the 1970s.

Griffiths says jewellery retail is “a fabulous industry” to work in.

“The bulk of the items we sell are bought by somebody to give to somebody else, so that’s a really nice thing to be part of.”

He says Grieve Diamond Jeweller’s investment in digital innovation has given it an edge in the awards, citing a recent focus on social media and keeping the website up-to-date as being important for the business’ growth. His team of eight staff are always working hard on the shop’s presentation, and the in-house jeweller is able to make one-off designs and import stones for special pieces.
