Japanese fast fashion giant Uniqlo has expressed interest in bringing its popular brand to New Zealand shores.
The retailer, which also designs all its own products, was founded 68 years ago and employs over 30,000 people across its global stores.
Uniqlo first opened in Melbourne in 2014, followed quickly by two other locations. Now the chain has its eyes set on New Zealand shores – but nothing is set in stone.
“We are still looking forward [to] the opportunity that we might have, or we will open, a store in New Zealand in the future,” the company said.
“We don’t have any updates yet if we are going to open a Uniqlo store in New Zealand.”
The announcement could tie in well with Kiwi Property’s plans to expand its upper levels of Sylvia Park Centre to include more department stores over the next few years.
The $200 million 20-hectare layout will include a new department store in its renovation.
The size and popularity of typical Uniqlo stores mean it would be a good fit for the location, which saw a large amount of foot traffic during the opening of H&M and Zara, late last year.
Uniqlo calls itself Japan’s largest apparel retail chain with a network of about 840 stores. Its first store opened in Hiroshima city in 1984.
