Kmart takes a jump for charity

Kmart has joined forces with the Drop Your Boss campaign, raising money for the Graeme Dingle Foundation by throwing its South Zone manager off the Sky Tower.

Kmart has joined forces with the Drop Your Boss campaign, raising money for the Graeme Dingle Foundation by throwing its South Zone manager off the Sky Tower.

The Graeme Dingle Foundation is a charity dedicated to supporting and developing the confidence and skill sets of at risk Kiwi youth.

Drop Your Boss, in partnership with the Graeme Dingle Foundation, encourages bosses to be thrown off in the Sky Tower Free Fall to set an example of helping kids step out of their comfort zones.

Caz Laramy, South Zone manager for Kmart was one of the 2017 participants for the jump. Laramy, who was nominated by the company, says supporting young Kiwi kids has always been a top goal for the homeware giant.

“It’s such an awesome charity, it is so positive and supporting Kiwi kids is really important… We have supported the Graeme Dingle Foundation before, it is such a great charity to be a part of so you don’t mind doing [the jump].”

Laramy says that although nerves were high during the day, the initial jump was a breeze.

“There was such good energy all around. A lot of nerves also but the adrenaline gets you through. Looking down across the skyline when I was up there, all I was thinking was this is for charity it is all worth it.”  

According to Laramy the jump was over quite quickly, who then got to watch fellow Kmart associate Regan Wallis do the free fall.

So far the campaign has raised just under $28,000. Kmart itself raised $1,116 for the charity to throw its two participants down the 192 metre drop.

Laramy says the Kmart donations close the evening of this coming Sunday, when the charity donations page will also close.

Laramy Post-Fall

Kmart also runs the Wishing Tree foundation, which is a charity appeal that distributes gifts to families in need around the holiday season. So far the appeal has raised more than 420,000 gifts that have been distributed to those in need.

Other participants included the likes of 71-year-old Graeme Dingle himself, Rob Clark for Neilsen and Kelly Bennett from One Plus One Communications.

Foundation co-founder and namesake, Graeme Dingle, says this event is exactly what his organisation works to achieve daily.

“A key part in the success of the organisation’s programmes is challenging young people to change their perceptions of what they think they can achieve – which makes this unique and novel fundraising event such a great fit. Investing in our country’s youth is the best investment New Zealand can make,” he says.
