The luxury handbag-maker’s new collection is blurring the lines between utilitarian practicality and elegant adornment.

For a bit of background, the Pearlies, also known as East London’s ‘Pearly Kingdom’, are an organised charity group known for their pearl button decorated outfits and do-good ethos.

Deadly Ponies has created a collection that is inspired by the charity group, and has used their iconic look for its latest bag and accessory designs.

The new items include Deadly Ponies’ common use of New Zealand deer nappa leather, and lambswool woven in khaki and classic black.

Most designs include hand-stitched mother-of-pearl buttons artfully arranged on the pieces in both a diamond pattern and horse-head insignia.

The Pearlies’ craft captured the eye of Deadly Ponies, but it was the group’s charity initiatives to help the underprivileged that struck a chord with the company.

Deadly Ponies will be donating all the proceeds of the ‘Lucky Charm’ (from the Pearlies collection) to Lifewise, a local New Zealand social development agency working to house the homeless.

Liam Bowden, Deadly Ponies creative director, says the Pearlies’ initiatives also relate to issues we face here in New Zealand.

“In New Zealand, our homelessness problem is increasing at an alarming rate. Everyone deserves to have a place they can call home, and this project gives us an opportunity to pitch in and help to house New Zealanders in need.”

The collection includes clutch bags, handbags, and keyrings. The Pearlies collection launches in store and online on 5 May 2017. The ‘Lucky Charm’ bag charm will be available for purchase from today.
