Queensgate Shopping Centre has opened again after an earthquake centred around Kaikoura saw its partial closure in November of 2016.
After six months of construction and demolition the complex will re-open in full force on April 6 with the promise of a rebuilt cinema and lower ground car park, details of which will be provided once planning and design work have been completed.
The centre, owned by Diversified NZ Property Trust, was partially opened 11 days after the Kaikoura quake, but will now open fully in early April.
Parts of the complex had suffered from cosmetic damage only, but still needed repairs before being able to re-open. The centre had an earthquake update page that kept customers in the loop on what was open and what was till closed around the holiday season.

Helen Oram, Hutt City Council environmental consents manager, acknowledges all those affected by the demolition.
“This work was essential for safety and we have appreciated everyone’s understanding during the past few months.”
The demolition process started early December of last year and was expected to take two months. Construction will continue into the new year even as stores fully open.
The building was deemed safe to operate in early December but stores were not allowed to open until new access points that complied with fire safety regulations were created.

Retailers whose premises remained closed because of the adjacent demolition will be given a confirmed date to access their stores in the coming week.
Centre management will hold an information evening for all retailers in late March to provide details of the reopening and to outline future developments at the Centre.
Queensgate is the largest enclosed shopping centre in the lower North Island, with over 180 tenancies occupying it. However, even two weeks after the quake, only just over 80 stores were open within the complex.
Diversified acquired the Queensgate Centre late November on 2015 for a cool AU$445 million.
