Kiwi apparel retailer We-Ar opens first Wellington outlet inside The Vault

Wellingtonian yogis rejoice – ethical fashion and yoga-wear label We-Ar is soon to arrive. The store-within-a-store represents the third Kiwi outlet for the retailer, which is also well-established in Bali. We spoke with founder Jyoti Morningstar about the new store, which opens on March 16.rn

Can you explain how We-Ar’s store within The Vault works? Is it a pop-up-style arrangement?

The super lovely Sarah Solaris of The Vault invited us to develop a space inside their beautiful premises in the historic Prudential Building in Plimmer Steps. I’ve long been an admirer of Sarah’s well curated spaces and loved the deco lines of the interior so it was an easy ‘Yes!’ It’s a nice opportunity to bring We-Ar to our Welly tribe and test the waters for further potential collaborations down here. So in some senses it’s a pop-up but a softly blooming and possibly long lasting one.

Is it a precursor to a standalone store?

The way the space works within The Vault it is really quite stand-alone anyway so really we’ll be seeing if the location is convenient for our tribe and if the space is big enough but it’s certainly extremely lovely with a whole wall of leadlight windows and gorgeous light streaming in!

The Wellington store brings We-Ar up to three stores each in Bali and New Zealand. Tell us about the significance of this positioning.

It’s really one store for each of my favourite neighbourhoods, haha – is happiness a bonafide business strategy?

Bali is an unusual choice for a Kiwi retailer. What led you to pursue that market?

Bali is one of my homes and the manufacturing base for We-Ar where we manufacture our ethical garments. It’s also a haven for Yogi’s, conscious travellers and all things We-Ar in soul so developing stores there has been a very organic progression for us. We have three stand-alone stores in Bali and also three collab stores with our friends. I love co-creating spaces with like-minded people – together we’re more!

What’s next for We-Ar? Is Australia or further afield on the cards at all?

I think Christchurch is next for us. Australia is certainly very appealing but We-Ar is very boutique in our manufacturing approach so mindfulness around expansion is key to our sustainable future.
