FMCG suppliers celebrated at the NZ Food Awards

The awards, which were held on Thursday evening at the Auckland War Memorial Museum, were held in association with Massey University. Nine products from 11 companies were awarded.

Massey University vice-chancellor Steve Maharey said New Zealand was unique in the world in its ability to produce high-quality, sustainable, natural food, but it was not yet getting enough value for these food products. Improving the value of New Zealand’s food offering is key to growing New Zealand’s economy.

“Producing high-value food will make New Zealand prosperous.”

Food Safety Minister Jo Goodhew presented the top prize, the Massey University Supreme Award, to crowd favourite Coastal Spring Lamb and Coastal Lamb. She says consumer expectations around food continue to sharpen, and manufacturers must continue to meet their high standards.

“Given the importance of the food and beverage sector to the New Zealand economy, with its contribution of $29 billion a year, it is important that New Zealand continues to be seen as a trusted supplier of safe and suitable food around the world.

“These awards are an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the contribution of everyone involved in the business of food towards making this a reality. I congratulate all of the companies who have been recognised for excellence in their categories,” says Goodhew.

Progressive Enterprises general manager merchandise Chris Fisher presented the Frozen Awards. In his speech, he spoke of how Countdown had changed the way it sources product to allow it to support more small suppliers – including those with the capacity to supply just one of its 184 stores.
